Lexus Safety System Recalibration After a Collision

Lexus safety system recalibration

Modern Lexus models, such as LS-series sedans, NX SUVs, RZ electric vehicles, and RC F performance coupes, are equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+). The LSS+ is the automaker’s selection of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), which combine multiple sensors and safety technologies.

The most recent version of LSS+ includes pre-collision warnings, lane departure alerts, radar-based cruise control, automatic switching between low and high beams, and road sign assistance.

While these technologies help reduce the risk of an accident, collisions can still happen. If you were involved in one while driving a Lexus, you should always verify that the technicians are certified to recalibrate your vehicle’s LSS+. Fixing the body panels and broken glass isn’t enough—without a safety recalibration, your Lexus could still be unsafe to drive.

Discover what a Lexus Safety System+ recalibration involves and why it’s necessary after body panel and auto glass repairs. Then, learn why you should only schedule Lexus safety system recalibrations at manufacturer-certified auto body shops.

Why Many Lexus Collision Repairs Include Recalibration

Fixing and recalibrating the sensors isn’t just for major crashes—minor fender benders can knock a parking camera or sensor out of alignment. Even if the impact hasn’t left any visible damage, such as bumper dents or scratched paint, the bump can be enough to cause malfunctions.

For example, if your Lexus lane assist is not working after a crash or a fender bender, it may be due to a sensor being out of alignment. Misaligned lane assist sensors misinterpret distances or read false positives. Even a shift of just a few millimeters can throw off the system’s ability to detect when your vehicle drifts from its lane, stopping it from issuing alerts.

Like most other auto manufacturers, Lexus recommends an ADAS recalibration after any collision that could have affected the sensors. While it may not be necessary after every crash, a Lexus-certified collision center will inspect your vehicle, test the ADAS sensors, and determine if they need recalibration.

When Do I Need a Lexus ADAS Recalibration?

While all accidents can potentially result in ADAS malfunctions, some collisions are more likely to damage or misalign sensors than others. Below are common scenarios:

Collision Type Damaged Parts Commonly Affected Sensors

Front-end collisions (including at low speeds)

  • Front bumper
  • Hood
  • Grille
  • Windshield
  • Adaptive cruise control radar
  • Lane tracing sensor
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front parking camera
  • Front ultrasonic sensors
  • Rain/light sensor

Rear-end collisions

  • Rear bumper
  • Trunk or hatch lid
  • Blind spot sensors
  • Rear parking camera
  • Rear ultrasonic sensors

Side collisions

  • Doors
  • Side mirrors
  • Body panels
  • Wheels

Manufacturer-certified mechanics can inspect your car and determine whether it needs Lexus radar sensor repairs, a lane assist system recalibration, or any other ADAS fixes.

Lexus ADAS Recalibration Process, Step By Step

Certified Lexus collision centers include sensor testing and diagnostics in their overall repair process to ensure the vehicle is safe to drive. Here’s what this process involves and why it’s essential after a collision:

  • Pre-calibration checks. Lexus-certified technicians visually inspect the vehicle’s bodywork, headlights, taillights, and mirrors for damage. They check for damage that could have knocked a sensor out of alignment.
  • Computer diagnostics. After the initial visual checks, the Lexus technicians access the vehicle’s onboard computer with a professional-grade OBD-II scanner. These devices can read error codes and messages corresponding to ADAS malfunctions, helping mechanics determine the repairs or fixes needed.
  • Workshop preparations. Many calibration processes require the vehicle to be on a flat and level surface. Auto body shops guide your vehicle to a level workshop floor, then set the tires to the correct pressure so the sensors are correctly aligned.
  • Static recalibrations. Some types of sensors and cameras can be recalibrated by running static tests, which don’t require leaving the auto body shop. Examples include the Lexus Panoramic View sensors, radar sensors, and some types of front cameras.

An example of a static recalibration test is the reflector test. Technicians use specialized reflectors set at precise distances to help the sensors recalibrate and measure distances correctly.

  • Dynamic recalibrations. Also known as a mobile recalibration. These are needed for sensors that cannot be recalibrated using static procedures. A dynamic recalibration requires technicians to take the vehicle to the road and go on a controlled drive, following precise instructions to reset the sensors.

Dynamic recalibration processes vary between makes and models. For example, a particular sensor could require driving on a multi-lane road at a fixed speed and over a specific distance.

  • Post-calibration checks. Once all tests and recalibrations are done, technicians function test all sensors. After completion, the shop may produce documentation or reports certifying that the Lexus ADAS systems are in proper working order.

Reputable Lexus repair centers will perform the manufacturer’s recommended recalibration processes for all affected sensors. They can access specialized diagnostics equipment, such as reflectors designed to work on Lexus sensors and OEM scan tool devices.

Risks of Skipping Recalibration

The right Lexus auto body shop should always offer recalibration as part of their repair services. If the repair center doesn’t provide them or skips them, you could face the following risks:

  • False or missed obstacle warnings. Sensors may fail to detect other vehicles, obstacles, or pedestrians correctly, resulting in false positives or missed warnings. In some models, this can prevent automatic emergency braking (AEB) from functioning.
  • Unreliable lane assist. Lane departure alerts may fail to work as intended or misjudge lane distances. This can cause the system’s automatic steering to fail when needed or turn on when unnecessary.
  • Malfunctioning cruise control. Misaligned radar and sensor systems may be unable to interpret distances correctly, resulting in unexpected braking or acceleration.
  • Lack of blind spot radar. Rear, side, and surround sensors may fail to spot vehicles in the blind spots. This increases the risk of a collision during lane changes, in dense urban areas, or while reversing.
  • No safety alerts. If the sensors are only slightly misaligned, the onboard computer may still register them as working correctly. This can prevent your Lexus from warning you that its sensors need servicing and recalibration.
  • Warranty and insurance risks. Accepting repairs from a shop that failed to offer recalibration risks voiding your warranty. If you are involved in an accident afterward, it can also lead to insurance claim denials.
